How to read this atlas

Each entry pairs a cognitive or neurobehavioural disorder with the brain regions its literature implicates, drawn on the same Harvard-Oxford and AAL2 parcellations used by the brain atlas. The ring groups the disorders into eleven domains; the brain at the centre repaints when you select one.

Every entry carries a strength-of-evidence tier. That tier describes how firmly the localisation is established, and nothing else, not severity, not prevalence, not how well the condition is understood clinically. Broca's aphasia and Alice in Wonderland syndrome are both real; only one of them has a replicated lesion map.

What is deliberately not drawn

A third of these entries highlight nothing, and that is the most important thing on the page. Both parcellations label grey matter only. There are no white matter tracts, no brainstem subdivisions, no named visual areas, no corpus callosum, no subthalamic nucleus. Conduction aphasia is classically a lesion of the arcuate fasciculus; akinetopsia is a lesion of V5; locked-in syndrome is the ventral pons inside a single undivided brainstem label.

Where that is the case the entry says so in prose and the brain stays still. Lighting up an adjacent gyrus would have made a better picture and a worse atlas, and a reader would have no way of telling the difference.

For education and research. This is not a diagnostic instrument. Lesion-symptom relationships describe groups; individual patients depart from them constantly, and a region highlighted here is where a deficit has been reported, not where it must arise.

Each disorder cites one review, chosen for covering the condition across its clinical and pathological aspects. References were retrieved from the published literature and checked for retraction notices; entries where no such review could be found say so rather than citing something weaker. Parcellations and rendering are credited on the terms page.
